a couple of years ago, on ig, i kept seeing the sweetest first day flags made with dowel rods but I decided to add a lil’ spin and change it up to use rulers!
i’ve linked the instagram reel i made in case you’re interested in watching a video of how i made these!

first day of school flag supplies
- printouts from Olive & Eve Co. (she is currently taking a break – these flags + these flags are similar and a great replacement though!)
- cardstock
- printer (we’ve had this exact one for 3 years & it’s amaaazing)
- rulers (these are the exact ones I used)
- ribbons (i love getting fun ones from Hobby Lobby)
- hot glue (this is an essential supply – I linked my exact hot glue gun)
- cut out stars (i used these ones – you can also make similar stars using gold sparkly ribbon from Hobby Lobby)
first, i printed the flags from Olive & Eve Co., cut them out and then hot glued the ruler on.
next, i cut 3-4 different ribbons and tied them onto the ruler.
finally, i added a glittery star on top with more hot glue.
these flags were SO easy to make but oh so cute and special for the kids, too! i absolutely LOVE how they turned out – what do you think?!
i’ve linked some other fun first day of school flags here.
