ARCH CITY TAVERN
862 N HIGH STREET
COLUMBUS, OHIO
My good friend recommended my husband & I check out this new Short North restaurant (it just opened a couple of months ago) for a date night and it didn’t take long for us to get there. A little north of The Hub we found this cute spot, that reminded me of Bernard’s initially, decorated like old Columbus with a replica of the Short North arch and a wall mural. Being the avid history-lover that I am, I have to share the meaning of “Arch City.” You know all of the arches found over the streets in the Short North? Back in the early 1900’s, metal arches lit by gaslight led the way for the travelers and provided electricity to the streetcars. Union soldiers marched under these lights after the Civil War ended. Story goes, nearly everyone in the country identified Columbus as “The Arch City.” Love it. Okay, I’m done — back to the Tavern. It has a great name, delicious cocktails (try the 862 Old Fashioned No. 1), good food (we had the Fish and Chips and Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese), and old-fashioned ambience. Will return for an Old Fashioned.
