Read on to learn more about Kate Stevens from Red Giraffe Designs as she shares a bit about herself and her jewelry:
Tell us a little bit about Red Giraffe Designs (what you do, what your inspirations for starting the business were).
I always knew I wanted to start my own business, I just didn’t know what that business would be. I grew up taking clothes and jewelry apart that weren’t quite my style and then making them into something more “me”. I never thought that something I have done for years just for fun would eventually turn into my full time job. I have a degree in Retail Merchandising and Fine Arts and that has helped significantly, but I’m continuing to learn new techniques and how to work with various materials. A lot of my pieces are made from scratch, but I still love taking apart old jewelry and turning it into something more fresh and modern.
I have to ask, how did you come up with the name, “Red Giraffe”?
Pretty simple: Red is my favorite color and my favorite animal is a giraffe. 🙂
What’s your favorite piece from your collection?
I’m making new things all the time so my favorites are always changing. I made a pair of gold hammered hoops with raw quartz pieces hanging from them that I love – but ask me in a week and I’ll probably have a new favorite!
What are some of your favorite (local or non-local) places to shop for jewelry and accessories?
I can’t say I shop at many places for jewelry and accessories. I tend to wear things that I make and things that were my Grandmother’s. However, I do love Wholly Craft and Simply Vague! They have an amazing selection of jewelry and accessories from so many talented local artists – I could be in those stores for hours!
Any other local businesses that you adore?
Bink Davies is great – they have so many unique gifts. I recently bought a few things for my friend’s bachelorette party and they were a hit! I also love Homage. I pretty much live in their tshirts and hoodies when I’m making jewelry. And of course I love Three Dog Bakery (and my dog Max loves it too).
